APEP Receives DOE Microgrid Research

November 19, 2014

The Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP) has been awarded a $ 1.2 million U.S. Department of Energy grant to develop and test a Generic Microgrid Controller (GMC) which is intended to be easily adapted to a wide range of microgrids. The GMC and its multiple modules will be developed and tested in a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) before being implemented on the UCI Microgrid for field tests. The GMC will be applicable to microgrids in general, independent of size and configuration. The goal is to provide a model and software specification standard, and thereby simplify the design effort to lower the cost barrier for the deployment of microgrids. Partnering with APEP in this project is Southern California Edison, ETAP, MelRok, CaISO, and UCI Facilities Management.
